Rovers Competitive Soccer - Valley Soccer Association FAQ

What is Rovers Soccer?
Rovers provides an opportunity for boys and girls to play competitive year-round soccer in the Valley zone which includes the communities (and surrounding areas) of Aberdeen, Hague, Langham, Hepburn, Dalmeny, Martensville, Warman, Waldheim, Osler, and Rosthern. There are two seasons outdoor (May-July) and indoor (October-March). Players have the opportunity to develop their skills supported by a strong coaching program, training clinics, league, and tournament play. Although part of a competitive league, the Rovers program is designed to be a fun and exciting opportunity for all players!

What ages can play Rovers?
The Rovers program is for players from the ages of 10 to 18 who qualify to play in groupings from U-12 to U-18 as directed by our league Saskatoon Youth Soccer Incorporated (SYSI). All age groups U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-18 offer teams for boys and girls. Depending on skill levels, teams are also placed in one of four divisions (Premier, Div 2, Div 3, or Div 4).

What skill level is required to be a Rover?
The Rovers program is NOT just for elite or premier athletes. It is for all players with a passion for soccer looking to take their games to the next level. The division system typically allows most interested players to be placed on a Rovers team, although occasionally it is recommend that players continue to develop their skills recreationally, and return to try-outs again for a later season.

What are the costs to be a Rover?
Fees for the Rovers program differ between the outdoor and indoor season due to the length of each, and also vary according to age group. For the 2010 outdoor season Rovers fees ranged from $165-$175. For the 2010/2011 indoor season fees remain unchanged from our previous year and range from $325-$375. In addition to the standard fees, players may participate in tournaments during each season and tournament costs are split between those attending each event. Participation in tournaments is voluntary. Rover players may purchase a variety of Rovers clothing and soccer bags each season, and this is optional. However, ALL players must be equipped with indoor or outdoor soccer shoes or cleats, shin pads, black soccer socks, and black soccer shorts. Jerseys are provided.

What is the time commitment required to be a Rover?
Typically most Rovers will play two games a week and practice once or twice a week. However, often there are several weeks in a season with only one game. The game schedules are set each season by SYSI and the practice times are set by the coaches of each team. Occasionally there will additional opportunities for players to take part in goalie clinics or other skill development sessions during the season.

Where do the Rovers play?
All regular season, and most tournament games, are played in Saskatoon with the majority of the indoor season scheduled at the Sask-Tel Soccer Center on the east-side of the city. Rover practices are held in a variety of towns within the valley zone, sometimes dependent on where the majority of the players on a team live, but more often where practice space can be booked.

Who do the Rovers play?
All Rovers teams play in the Saskatoon Youth Soccer league and compete against other SYSI clubs.

Why do I need to try-out to be a Rover?
The Rovers program is part of a competitive soccer league. As is the policy for most SYSI teams, all players wanting to join Rovers must be assessed by our technical director. This assessment system allows players to be placed in an appropriate division level to maximize their opportunities for skill development and playing time.

The Rovers club is a team organization run by parent volunteers. All coaches, managers, and Rovers Coordinators are parent volunteers without whom the teams would not be possible. Additional help is always welcomed and greatly appreciated.
